History
Establishment of the College: Buddha Bhanu Saraswati College, established on the 23rd August 1993, is a self-financed co-educational institution managed by the Gurkha Community of Shillong — a linguistic minority community of Meghalaya. The college is registered under the Society Registration Act 7 of 1993 (Reg. No. SR/BBSC-419/93) and affiliated to the Meghalaya Board of School Education for Higher Secondary (Arts and Commerce) and North Eastern Hill University for Undergraduate Courses in Arts and Commerce.
Growth and Development of the College:
(a) Affiliation(s): Starting with 94 students in 1993 at the Gorkha Pathasala High School campus, the college received NEHU affiliation for Pre-University in 1994, then for Degree Courses in Arts (1995), Commerce (2000), and Honours in English, Economics, Education, and Commerce (2004). The college currently offers Honours in various disciplines including English, Economics, Education, Political Science, History, Philosophy, Hindi, Nepali, and more.
(b) Building: The college moved to its permanent campus at Gorkha Thakurbari Radha Krishna Temple premises and now serves over 1600 students from across Meghalaya.
(c) Staff: The college currently employs 40 Teaching and 9 Non-Teaching staff, governed by the college’s service rules and UGC/MHRD guidelines.
(d) Student Strength: From humble beginnings, the college now serves more than 1600 students, about 70% of whom are from indigenous communities — a testament to the college’s credibility and growth.
